Alla prima refers to a direct painting approach where paint is applied wet on wet without letting earlier layers dry. In Italian, the term alla prima means “at first attempt”. Paintings created in this approach are usually completed within a single session. The task is to complete the painting using predominantly warm & cool black paint + additional complimentary colours in order to mix many different shades of black within 1 x 2 hour session ….this went on a little longer…more like 3 1/2 – 4  hours!
